Item Description
"Tip Top Weekly" was a magazine published by Street & Smith, starting April 19, 1896 and running for more than 800 issues. The magazine featured several fictional heroes but was mainly devoted to the ongoing adventures of student Frank Merriwell, who began at a fictional New England academy and then moved on to Yale. Adept in sports, Merriwell eventually became an international adventurer. Gilbert Patten authored many Merriwell stories, writing under the pseudonym Burt L. Standish. The character went on to appear in over 300 dime novels, numerous radio dramas, comic books, comic strips as well as a 12 Chapter movie serial. Offered here is issue No. 242, published Dec. 1, 1900. 7.25x10.5" newsprint magazine features great football cover featuring Merriwell and interior page features ad for "Tip Top League Member's Badge" premium that was available for 20¢ (10¢ in cash/stamps and 10¢ in coupons; two of which are provided on the printed page). Issue is evenly aged but o/w supple, clean and VF overall. Comes w/2-3/8" long badge w/correct "Tip-Top League" top hanger. Whitehead & Hoag maker name on back along w/bar pin that has soldering as produced. Front of badge has five cross-like segments w/center featuring relief portrait of Merriwell surrounded by raised "True As Steel - Frank Merriwell" text. Badge exhibits moderate luster wear and is Fine overall. Rare and historic early character premium badge.
