Item Description
Ribbon badge 3.75" tall with 1.75" sepia real photo showing the American poet Edwin Markham with text "The Man With The Hoe Club/Aug. 21st 1902". Markham created his poem in late 1898 inspired by Jean-Francois Millet's painting L'homme a la houe, a painting interpreted as a socialist protest about the peasant's plight. The poem was presented at a New Year's Eve party poetry reading and immediately afterward in 1899 published by the San Francisco Examiner and then across  the country to much acclaim, drawing attention to the issue of labor exploitation and promoting labor reform. Markham became a sought after public speaker, especially to labor groups,  likely the reason behind the creation of this badge. One dark spot on brass  hanger, age traces on fabric and small age spot at top of the celluloid. VF and the only example we've seen.
