Item Description
Wally Schirra (1923-2007) was among the group of seven elite military test pilots selected by NASA to operate the experimental Mercury spacecraft and become the first American astronauts. Schirra became the fifth American and ninth human to travel into space, and was the only astronaut to have flown in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. Offered here is 8x10" official NASA litho print featuring portrait of Schirra in spacesuit, posed in front of map of Earth and model spacecraft. Schirra has boldly signed in black felt tip pen. Back of photo has NASA copyright information. Exc. Comes w/20.5x28" poster by Cloverleaf features portrait of Schirra at bottom center, surrounded by Schirra - The World's Greatest Pilot" text. Top features more promotional text, referring to him as a hero while bottom has AP quote that reads "Only Schirra's Cool Nerve Prevented Disaster," a reference to Schirra's decision not to eject after engine shutdown during the launch of Gemini 6, preventing injuries to him and fellow astronaut Tom Stafford.
