Item Description
10x13.25" sheet of pulp paper w/7.5x11" image area featuring mixed media original art by Fred Harman, noted for his work on the "Red Ryder" comic strip. Art depicts the titular character from Harman's "Bronc Peeler," Harman's first comic strip, which began in 1934. The term "peeler" is cowboy slang for a specialist in breaking horses, which given the image of Bronc Peeler riding a bucking bronco, is well suited. Harman has signed in pencil at lower right. Sheet has even moderate aging w/slightly lighter margins as once framed and two thin strips of tape staining to top extreme margin. Would display VF if matted and framed. Harman's son and Harman Art Museum curator Fred Harman III dated art as c. 1937 (art comes w/correspondence stating such), making this the earliest piece of Harman original art to come to auction. This art also represents the only known surviving original art to featuring Harman's first syndicated character. Dan Makara Collection.
