Item Description
13x33.75" wooden frame contains artboard w/India ink original art by "Mutt And Jeff" creator Bud Fisher. Art is for July 2, 1912 and has been professionally matted to 7.5x28.25". Strip features five panels, w/Jeff receiving letter from his sister after not hearing from her for six years. She states she's sending Jeff's nephew for a visit, prompting Jeff to rush out to buy children's toys. He excitedly waits, only to be shocked into jumping out his window when his nephew (who is taller than Jeff) finally arrives. Handwritten text in pencil at bottom reads "Jeff Ought To Train His Nephew For A White Hope," a reference to white boxers who sought to defeat African-American champion Jack Johnson. Fisher has signed at end of this caption. Last panel has handwritten Star Co. copyright. Custom mat has pencil date at lower right. .75" streak of staining to third panel and lower right has some small edge tears. Artboard is evenly aged and Fine overall. Art is further enhanced by hand-painted "Mutt And Jeff 1912" banner image at bottom center of frame created by artist Dan Makara. Dan Makara Collection.
