Item Description
Only example known to Hake's, 2-3/16", no maker but with union bug on lower metal back which includes opening to insert name card and fixed horizontal bar pin. The specified "Participant" name typed on the card is "John Veitch", whose identity we do not know but who also appears on the following button from 1950 honoring Mel Allen. October 1, 1949 was an exciting day at Yankee Stadium. This was the next-to-last day of the season and Yankee management had earlier selected this day to honor DiMaggio. The season closed with a final two games vs the Boston Red Sox. When the Sox arrived, they held a one game lead over the Yankees. On October 1, 1949, the day this button was worn, 70,000 fans honored DiMaggio in an hour long ceremony, followed by a do-or-die game they won on Saturday and capped by a victory on Sunday which won them the AL Championship with the team going on to win the first of five consecutive World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers. "Joltin Joe" would finish his Yankees career in 1951 with a lifetime batting average of .325 along with 361 home runs and 1,537 RBI's. Best known for his 56 game hitting streak in 1941, DiMaggio was also famous for his brief marriage to movie star Marilyn Monroe following his playing days during the 1950s. The upper metal back and pin has very minor surface oxidation. The front "window" has a narrow line of air around the opening as made. Glossy and Exc. Paul Muchinsky Collection Book Example.
