Item Description
Scarce 2-1/16" single day issue from June 26, 1927, with Whitehead & Hoag back paper. Grabowski was back-up catcher on the fabled 1927 Yankees team. Why he was honored with his own day in 1927 when powerhouses such as Ruth and Gehrig were not remains a mystery.  Johnny Grabowski played seven seasons in the Major Leagues. He joined the Yankees in 1927 and was part of World Championship teams in both '27 and '28. Known to his teammates as "Nig", he was a reliable catcher with a decent arm who was very well liked by his other Murderers' Row teammates. Very light minimal surface wear in reflected light. Exc.
