Item Description
Scottish immigrant Alexander Winton arrived in NYC  in 1878 and by the century's turn he was one of America's best known auto makers and race car drivers. His first car was sold March 24, 1898. He viewed racing as essential to develop and test technology for use in auto making. This rare button survives from the public debut of the first of his three Bullet race cars. This 1.25" button has a 1-3/8" stickpin fastener, a W&H back paper and a metal disc under the paper that holds two ribbons reading in silver "Press " and "Glenville Track". The button shows early auto with wing accent all in gold, sponsor's name in gold on a blue ribbon design and event date of Sept. 16, 1902 in blue below. The debut occurred on a Cleveland area horse track with Winton personally driving his Bullet ( No. 1) ten miles in ten minutes and fifty seconds, averaging 55.38 m.p.h. Bullet No.1 went on to win the first sanctioned race at Daytona Beach, FL. Bullet  No.1 was gifted in 1930 to the Smithsonian Institution. Slightest age on ribbons. Cello is NM displaying Mint. The only example known to us of this historic car industry artifact.
