Item Description
1.25" with W&H back paper. These fund raising menagerie events, all under the direction of Dr. L. J. Cooke, took place in 1903, again in 1904, and had a grand finale promoted on this button in 1913 with some 600 student performers under a gigantic canvas tent on Northrop Field. The object was to benefit the "Minnesota (Student?) Union". There were not only real animals such as the parrot, elephant and monkey on this button but also parading dinosaurs and dragons. Next to the elegant white faced clown on this button, in tiny type, is the apparent name of the designer "Teigen".  The show cleared $1,000. Similar events were revived in the 1920s. The button surface has some long but extremely light scratches in reflected light. Overall VF but displays glossy and Mint. We've seen three in our 53 years.
