Item Description
14x20" offset litho on thin white stock promoting an event "Friday, March 5th" at "Oakland Auditorium Arena." Headline text "Revolutionary Intercommunal Day Of Solidarity For Bobby Seale, Chairman of the Black Panther Party, Political Prisoner" also listing "Ericka Huggins, Angela Davis & Ruchell Magee" as "Political Prisoner". The event was also a "Post-Birthday Celebration For Huey P. Newton, Minister Of Defense And Supreme Commander Of The Black Panther Party" w/speakers including Newton and "Kathleen Cleaver Communications Secretary Black Panther Party" and in a twist that could only happen in the Bay Area the featured musical act was "The Grateful Dead." Pin hole in each corner w/small loss at top left. One tiny dot of foxing in lower right field between "The" and "Lumpen." Otherwise moderate handling. Fine. A rare poster combining civil rights and rock 'n roll that provides a fascinating window into the early 70s Oakland scene during the cultural revolution.

Jerry Garcia of the Greatful Dead mused about the show saying "We have some loose semi-association with the Black Panthers because we met Huey and got along well with him. We don't deal with things on the basis of content, the idea of a philosophy or any of that shit - mostly it's personalities. The show did what it was supposed to do - it made them some bread. But it's not our concern what they're doing or why they're doing it. They have a rhetoric trip going on, but what they're doing is actual, practical things. They've got a free breakfast trip, and they're starting a free shoes thing... We don't have any affiliations with any specific organizations, but if there's a righteous [benefit to play], no matter who's doing it, we'll do it."
