Item Description
6x6.75" hand painted die cut wooden elephant w/horizontal bar pin affixed to reverse. Likely produced for either William G. Milliken's Michigan 27th District campaign in 1960 or a hopeful piece for South Carolinian's Roger Milliken, the textile magnate who helped build the fledgeling Republican Party in his state even playing an instrumental role in converting Strom Thermond to switch to the GOP. The conservative legend was an early (1954) contribution to William F. Buckley helping establish the National Review, was critical in encouraging Barry Goldwater to seek the 1964 nomination, and largely funded Nixon's famous 'Southern Strategy" by way of the "Senator Thurmond Speaks for Nixon-Agnew" ad campaign. Trivial wear. NM as made. Whatever the case it's a rare coattail that is the first we've encountered and undoubtedly produced in extremely limited quantities.
