Item Description
3-5/16" X 6- 1/8" with stiff tan  paper covers with16 now a bit off-white pages. Undated, but with 1895 K of P ribbon badge on back cover dated May 21, 95. Being "Catalogue No. 9" (first seen and 1-8 never seen) and title page references "lapel and advertising buttons" as well as "Celluloid Badges" on the front cover, we estimate in use starting Spring, 1896 onward, briefly, as the next catalogue we know of is No. 20 Ball and Parade Badges, which includes items dated up to Oct. 21, 1897. Catalog No. 25 Ribbon Badges also dates to 1897 and thus this Catalog No, 9/Society Buttons had a life of only a few months. It seems in the 1896 button invention era, catalogs were an evil necessity to W&H, as by the teens their letters to prospective customers explicitly state they do not issue catalogs and deal by samples. Interior covers list many organizations, then title and a few pages give ordering details and then there are 13 pages, 8 to a page of group insignia including League of American Wheelmen, many fraternal and many labor brotherhoods. Small rust on center staples, 2" cover split spine top, .5" edge tear last page. VF. One known. Historic pin-back button catalog documents, by its breadth of organizations included, the immediate acceptance of the pin-back button across American society and across the states, all within its 1896 year of introduction by Whitehead & Hoag.
