Item Description
1" pair of buttons that document the first mass act of civil disobedience on an American college campus - a harbinger of the revolutionary social protest and multiple tragedies that consumed the remainder of the decade and into the 1970s. The college administration's attempt to ban political activity on campus resulted in the student protest and stand-off with police on October 1-2, 1964. On October 3, the group name Free Speech Movement was adopted. By the end of the next week, October 10th, these "Free Speech" buttons appeared, selling for 25¢ to finance the cause. Originals carry two markings, a "Local 115" union bug stamp on the metal back and a small bug on the celluloid curl at 6 o'clock. The first of these is the master button from the Marshall Levin Collection with his inked notation "1964" on the metal reverse. This has tiny, light scratches in reflected light. VF. The second has a narrow cello split .25" long on the back with a NM front. This is the button photographed for the book (page 66 with back story) Button Power by Carter/Hake. Comes w/Hake's COA.
