Item Description
1.25" with back paper by Erhman, a former Whitehead & Hoag employee who began his own button making business based in Boston and with his factory in Milford, N.H., which was also the location of this early supplier of teddy bear stuffed toys. Button text reads "The Big Store/H.H. Barber". Pictured is very early Steiff-like teddy bear which apparently has jointed arms and legs. While not the first button to picture a teddy bear inspired by Clifford Berryman's cartoon of Theodore Roosevelt, this is the first we know of to picture a teddy bear stuffed toy. This is the  button photographed  to illustrate the back story of the creation of the teddy bear as shown on page 13 of Button Power by Carter/Hake. Exc. One known. Comes with Hake's COA.
