Item Description
2-1/16" with stunning color and detail, W&H back paper, and two under the collet ribbons printed in lustrous silver. Shown are three English settlers' ships, two fierce eagles, wings spread, perched on frames enclosing Captain John Smith opposite Pocahontas (as adult in English garb), with below the Monitor and Merrimac in battle with US and Confederate flags on their decks amid blasting cannons and, at center, Robert E. Lee's nephew Fitzhugh Lee who had a notable career (Civil War, Gov. of Virginia, War of 1898/Cuba) but appears on this button as he was President of the Exposition until his death in 1905. Slightest ribbon age. A couple nearly invisible gray rim dots above word "Exposition". Still, of the few that we've been able to offer, a gorgeous example. A mate to similar Jamestown button picturing Theodore Roosevelt, and in our experience the scarcer of the two. Exc. Alan Weinberg Collection.
