Item Description
3.25" tall heavy brass badge with most surfaces covered in enamel and with a link below joining a second link on a miniature replica of a cotton bale wrapped in a burlap type fabric all held in place by five individual black painted metal straps and brass links. The bale is 1x1.25x.5" thick and solidly formed. The outer circle of the badge reads "A.A.O.N.M.S. Rochester N.Y. 1911." The initials stand for Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. This group was established in 1870 by members of the New York City Masonic order. Centered over the fraternal symbolic pyramid and saber is a 1.25" slightly convex disc covered in porcelain enamel with title above "Nobles Of West Mississippi" in a crescent shape which encompasses a scene of a black man with exaggerated lips and teeth having taken a large bite from a slice of watermelon held in both hands. In the bkg. are two wood frame buildings, one with smoke coming from a chimney. Reverse has diamond shape logo naming  maker "The Chas. M. Robbins Co. Attleboro Mass." There is one tiny enamel flake gone to left of "Rochester" and another to right of "1911". The "bale" has a little fabric off the front between the metal straps but nothing is loose.  Outstanding enamel work. Only our second seen. VF. See Shrine mirror #561.
