Item Description
8x12.75" letter w/original 3.5x8.5" envelope retaining its American shield white paper seal on reverse. Body of the Jan. 26, 1858 letter, written in an unknown hand, offers condolences on the death of "Your Majesty's Beloved Sister, Her Royal Highness Donna Maria" concluding "May God Have Your Majesty In His Safe And Holy Keeping." Signed boldly at conclusion "James Buchanan" at lower right and by Sec. of State "Lewis Cass" at lower left, in black dip pen ink. Five horizontal mailing folds and minor edge wear. VF. Comes w/Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
