Item Description
8.5x11x3" deep box contains medium (8-10) size Doctor Solar costume. ©1966 Western Publishing. Based on the Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom comic book character, who first appeared in Gold Key's Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom #1 in 1962 and has since appeared in other incarnations in books published by Valiant Comics in the 1990s, Dark Horse Comics in the 2000s, and Dynamite Entertainment in the 2010s. Generic Collegeville box has original store price sticker at upper right corner of lid and has "Doctor Solar" stamped name on bottom side panel. Lid has .75" and 1.25" tears by window, which is missing. Two tiny holes at top of main lid panel. Box is evenly aged and VG/Fine overall. Thin Vacuform mask features exposed portion of Doctor Solar's face rendered in green as it appeared on cover of Gold Key comics. Mask has large dent to forehead and 1.5" cracks (w/tape repairs on interior) below ear and on jaw. Upper left edge of head has dent and visor area as well as radiation symbol on forehead show some paint wear. VG. Suit has overall height of 40" and features great action images of Doctor Solar in flight on chest, along w/"Doctor Solar - Man Of The Atom" name. Chest has 1.5x2.5" spot of dark staining w/some scattered moisture staining around this area and at shoulders. Costume has aged, w/aging more noticeable along fold lines. Costume is free of any of the splits typically seen in costume of this age and material and Collegeville tag remains attached. VG/Fine. Given that Doctor Solar did not see the level of popularity some of his superhero contemporaries did, sales of this costume were not strong, resulting in the rarity of the costume today.
