Item Description
1.25" w/union bugs in field at 3 and 9 o'clock. Only minor surface wear in reflected light. NM. In 1949 a group of 12 Communist Party members were charged in violation of the Smith Act and accused of plotting to overthrow the government. Among the group were prominent party members and labor leaders including Jack Stachel, William Z. Foster, Gus Hall and civil rights activist Henry Winston. Due to overwhelming public opinion against the defendants, 11 were convicted. This trial along with the subsequent prosecution of over 100 more party members in the following years decimated the Communist Party in the US.
