Item Description
12.5x18-3/8" thin artboard featuring original pen and ink twice up art by noted Silver Age Superman comic book artist Curt Swan for the Oct. 1965 issue of Action Comics #329 published by DC Comics. Art has been inked by Sheldon Moldoff. The cover features large full body image Superman at center, wielding the Super-Sword of Krypton and large Super-Shield (which was rainbow-colored for the published comic). A large crowd can be seen behind the Man of Steel, a police officer holding them back as Superman heads into battle against "The Ultimate Enemy," a robotic knight constructed out of the indestructible metal Kryptium by Jon Smatten, a minor repeat-adversary of Superman. Superman's word balloon is cut-out paste-over that has been hand-lettered. Starburst of text at upper right has also been hand-lettered. Cover has "Action Comics" title paste-over as well as "Comics Code Authority" seal and issue number/date/price paste-overs. Supergirl text at top has also been hand-lettered, with "Supergirl" name being inked on paste-over strip and "Extra!" notice at start being hand-lettered paste-over. Spot of white correctional fluid between Superman's head and sword. Artboard has some scattered light aging and all sides have been trimmed, not affecting image area. Some minor scattered glue staining at upper left around paste-overs, but art remains bold, clean and VF overall and could easily be matted and framed for superb display. Approximately 20 covers in total of Action Comics and Superman titles were penciled and inked by the team of Swan and Moldoff, and of those, very few have ever come to auction. The only example ever sold by Hake's was for Action Comics #309, which realized $112,015 in 2013, the current record for any Swan cover art. David Barsalou Collection.
