Item Description
George Foreman and Muhammad Ali spent much of the middle of 1974 training in Zaire, getting acclimated to its tropical African climate. The fight was originally scheduled Sept. 25 (Sept. 24 in the US due to the time difference) however, eight days prior to the fight, Foreman was cut above his right eye during a sparring session. This required Foreman to receive 11 stitches, w/the date of the fight pushed back to Oct. 30. Offered here is a large and impressive 38-1/8x 54.5" poster advertising "The Rumble In The Jungle," featuring photo images of both fighters from the waist up, set against bkg. of Africa. The match was watched by a record estimated TV audience of 1 billion viewers worldwide, becoming the world's most-watched live TV broadcast at the time. This included a record estimated 50 million viewers watching the fight pay-per-view on closed-circuit theater TV as noted by "Live From Africa On Big Screen Closed Circuit TV" text across top. Original date on poster has been covered w/2.5x16.25" paper strip w/new fight date. Poster also notes Stanley Theatre showing location and bottom lists $5 advance ticket price. Poster has been linen-mounted and is now rolled. Poster has some scattered restoration to margins w/some color touch-ups to thin 15" vertical line at top center. Aside from this, restoration to main image area is minimal and poster retains bright and clean appearance w/vibrant colors. Displays Exc. Iconic poster for this historic boxing match.
