Item Description
Other than comic books, there are no known Batman collectibles between his debut in 1939 and 1943.  In the 1943 movie pressbook for The Batman Columbia serial, three rare card stock premiums are shown, a movie club card, a mask and a plane. These were give-away items available to various sponsors (for them to imprint) such as movie theaters and department stores. While the mask is rare and we have offered only a few in our 54 years, this plane is even rarer and the only example ever offered by Hake's. It differs slightly from the press book version in that the one we are offering is produced as two die-cut pieces, as opposed to a sheet w/cut-out pieces (and assembly instructions on said sheet). Each piece is about 3x8.5 and consists of wings (w/text "Batplane Used By The Batman") and body w/imprint of the now defunct national department store chain "Robinson's." As this rarity has never been seen by most, our consignor had Federal Forensic Associates Inc. test the ink and paper of the plane to verify it dates to the era of the serial and comes w/a letter from the firm attesting to this. It should also be mentioned that a reproduction of this premium appears in The Batman Vault, a 2009 publication. Our consignor was the contributor of this Batplane to the Batman Vault. After the consignor had the Batplane professionally photographed, DC removed "Robinson's" and added a dotted line and assembly letters for publication purposes. Plane has never been folded/assembled. Moderate aging to blank backs. Tiny wear to the die-cut tips/points. Both pieces remains bright and clean w/strong color and imprinted design/text. VF/Exc. Among the rarest Batman items and premiums we've ever offered.
