Item Description
Large and impressive 18" tall stuffed cloth doll features great depiction of baby Buttercup from the long-running comic strip Toots And Casper. Doll's body, arms legs, and face are cotton sateen and is complete w/all original clothes, consisting of a one-piece cotton shirt and pants, along w/cotton socks and booties. The doll's face has printed features and back of head has printed "Buttercup By Permission Jimmy Murphy - Copyright 1924 By King Features Syndicate, Inc." text. At some point a small hole in the top of the head was made and a length of cloth-covered wire was attached to the head (w/attached patriotic ribbon bow) to imitate the one unruly curl that Buttercup had in the strip. Doll's head, arms and legs are fully articulated for posing, however due to this feature the doll would need a doll stand for upright display. A round metal voice box can be felt on the inside of the dolls back, this no longer functions. Doll is evenly aged and clean w/two safety pins holding back of Buttercup's outfit closed. Fine overall. A well-made and scarce early comic character doll.
