Item Description
Large 18-3/8x18.5x1.25" deep cardboard box w/wonderfully illustrated main panel showing Superman about to land on warplane that is shooting at him. Box contains Milton Bradley game No. 4857. Box bears no copyright, but this is obviously a licensed item as produced by a major manufacturer. Box is evenly aged and shows some scattered dust soiling and moderate wear w/all bottom flaps missing and one missing inner flap at top. Side panels have heavy creasing and bottom center of main box panel has 1" tear. Good/VG overall. Box contains 18x18" paper covered heavy cardboard double-sided target w/brass grommet at top center for hanging. One side features generic target image while opposite side features large full body image of Superman at center, surrounded by 15 different warplanes, several of which are firing at him. Top center has heavy 5.75" vertical crease which breaks surface paper on both sides. Scattered edge wear w/small corner tip off surface paper at upper left of Superman side. Fine overall. Comes w/generic pressed metal gun and rubber-tipped dart (rubber has hardened w/age). A war years toy, but we believe this game was never put into mass production, accounting for its extreme rarity. We know of only two other boxed examples and one loose target; in 2015 we sold one of the other boxed examples (in lower grade) for $4,174. A truly special piece of Superman merchandise and a must for any serious Superman collector. David Barsalou Collection.
