Harrison Gray Otis, the publisher, blamed unionists. Investigator William J. Burns was hired and eventually focusing on a trip to Los Angeles by Ortie McManigal & James McNamara, the brother of John McNamara Secretary-Treasurer of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers Union. The McNamara brothers were arrested and extradited to Los Angeles. Famed defense attorney Clarence Darrow took the case w/the brothers initially pleading not guilty.
