Item Description
7/8" w/Pioneer Nov. Co. on curl. Issued by A.F. of L. in support of their member "Kidnapped" by authorities. On October 1, 1910 an explosion destroyed the printing plant of the Los Angeles Times. Harrison Gray Otis, the publisher, blamed unionists. Investigator William J. Burns was hired and eventually focusing on a trip to Los Angeles by Ortie McManigal & James McNamara, the brother of John McNamara Secretary-Treasurer of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers Union. The McNamara brothers were arrested and extradited to Los Angeles. Famed defense attorney Clarence Darrow took the case w/the brothers initially pleading not guilty. Prosecutors, wishing to avoid making the pair labor martyrs, agreed to a change in plea to avoid the death penalty. Button is a touch off center towards 12 o'clock as made.
