Item Description
1.25". No maker. Spring pin holds ribbon and 2" tall solid celluloid (white) baseball player with a bat. This is a mate to the previous lot. This ball club was established by Thomas T. Wilson, in Nashville, Tennessee as the semi-pro Nashville Standard Giants on March 26, 1920. The team was renamed the Elite Giants in 1921, and formally joined the Negro National League in 1929 before moving to Baltimore, Maryland in 1938, where the team remained for the duration of their existence. They won their first ever league title in 1939, defeating the Homestead Grays in the championship series. The following season, 1940, would see the Grays return the favor, topping the Elite Giants by the slimmest of margins. A number of future major leaguers wore the uniform of the Elite Giants, including National Baseball Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Leon Day. Junior Gilliam (1953 National League Rookie of the Year), and Joe Black (1952 National League Rookie of the Year) were both former 'Elites' and won consecutive Rookie of the Year honors for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the early 1950's. Aging to the ribbons and figure which are Fine, button is glossy and Exc. A NL rarity that escaped even Paul Muchinsky, and it is unlisted in his book.
