AMONG THE EARLIEST FLOYD GOTTFREDSON MICKEY MOUSE SYNDICATE ART TO EVER COME TO AUCTION
Approx. 7x29" artboard features original pen and ink art for Oct. 27, 1930 daily strip, featuring pencils by longtime Mickey Mouse comic artist Floyd Gottfredson (whose tenure w/the strip began on May 5, 1930 and lasted until his retirement in 1975) w/inks by Gottfredson and Hardie Gramatky (Disney artist/animator who later created Little Toot and other famous children's books, as well as becoming a renowned watercolor painter). Strip is from the "Mr. Slicker And The Egg Robbers" storyline (the third major story arc of the comic strip and the first written completely by Gottfredson) and features four panels, showing Marcus Mouse - Minnie Mouse's father - driving hay wagon and watering horses while worrying about the family's financial situation as their chickens appear as if they have stopped laying eggs. In actuality, a thief has been operating on their farm. Upon entry into the chicken coop Marcus is flummoxed by the sheer amount of eggs available that night as the night prior there were none. Minnie's father appears in every panel. First panel has been signed "Walt Disney" by Gottfredson. Third panel has thin Walter E. Disney copyright strip paste-over and inked date. Blue pencil "1" at upper left and grease pencil "435" at top right. Back has "A Good Crop Of Hen Fruit" (King Features Syndicate's episode title for the strip, for those newspapers that wished to give it one) written in blue pencil. Artboard has been rolled and has curl as such. Left/right margins show moderate wear w/some fraying to edges; not affecting art. Pin holes at top corners. Scattered dust soiling to margins. Second panel has a few faint spots of staining on word balloon and last panel has small spot of staining just above center. Rest of art remains clean. Fine overall, but art still displays well and would look nice framed. The example offered here is among the earliest Floyd Gottfredson Mickey Mouse syndicate art to ever come to auction, our last auction featured the earliest example (from same story, just two days prior), which sold for $24,013. Important and historic Mickey Mouse comic art. From the Estate of Disney Artist Earl Duvall, known for his work on Disney comic strips in the early 1930s and for a handful of animated short films he directed at Warner Bros. Cartoons.
