Item Description
1-3/8" litho w/Geraghty & Co. Chicago, IL. on reverse. Outstanding design w/center vertical band reading "Put An X" & "Liberty Safety 1932." Floating head portraits of candidates and last names/offices below in top quadrants w/lower carrying slogans "Bring Back Beer" and "Bring Back Business." A hairline scratch in blue field at top right. Otherwise only trivial paint wear. NM. J. Hamilton Lewis was a colorful long time politician first serving as a Congressmen at Large from Washington State in 1899. He settled in Chicago and was appointed to the US Senate in in 1912 losing his seat in 1918. He re-emerged in 1930 winning back his Senate seat at the age of 76. This button was likely issued to Illinois participants at the Democratic National Convention where Lewis was briefly a favorite son candidate supported by Chicago Mayor Anton Cermack. This is only the second example known to us and combined w/the terrific design and slogans touching on the issues of prohibition and depression it is among the most impressive and rare FDR buttons. John Pendergrass Collection.

The flamboyantly dressed Lewis could have been considered something of a Senate show horse but his skills as an orator elevated him to Majority Whip where he proved he was just as much a work horse. When Harry Truman was first elected to the body he was shunned by many fellow Democrats, Lewis made a point to try and befriend him reassuring the young Missourian that "For The First Six Months You'll Wonder How The Hell You Got Here. After That You'll Wonder How The Hell The Rest Of Us Got Here."
