Item Description
1" w/Pioneer Nov M'fg Co. New York" back paper. Moderate surface wear under magnification. Exc. Tom and wife Rena Mooney, Warren Billings, Israel Weinberg, and Ed Nolan were indicted by a grand jury for murder related to the deaths occurring after a dynamite bomb exploded during the Preparedness Day parade July 22, 1916. Nolan was never brought to trial. Rena Mooney and Weinberg were acquitted. Billings was sentenced to life in prison and Mooney was sentenced to death by hanging. This is perhaps the most illusive button issued and the only featuring all five principal figures. Mooney became the most famed political prisoner in the US. The international attention the cases received resulted in a commutation of Mooney's death sentence but despite a commission set up by President Woodrow Wilson that found little evidence of guilt Mooney remained jailed until he was pardoned by Gov. Culbert Olson in 1939.
