Item Description
1" w/blue-tone portrait of the Heavyweight champ at center. Light brown dots of age seen on reverse w/a few traces of this age just visible around circumference and vertical hairline scratches in portrait field seen in reflected light. VF. Frederick Madison Roberts was elected to the California State Assembly in 1918 becoming the first African American elected to the Assembly and the first elected to any public office on the West Coast. He ran for a US House seat in 1938 when this button was likely produced, just a year after Louis became champ. Of additional interest, Roberts was the great-grandson of Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson.
