Item Description
First example Hake's has offered. 2.25'. J.H. Shaw of Philadelphia back paper (minor wear and two insect holes). Attached under collet is 2" American flag. Amazing button design features illustration of an elephant with body covered by real photo portraits of 21 players all in A's caps, their last names below each image (full list online). Seated on the neck of the elephant is team manager and National Baseball Hall Of Fame member Connie Mack. His body is an illustration while head is a real photo. Text above the elephant reads "Champion Athletics" while its trunk holds a "1911 Pennant." Date also appears below image. Highlighting the group of player images are a total of four National Baseball Hall of Famers in addition to Mack: Frank Baker, Chief Bender, Eddie Collins and Eddie Plank. The 1911 Philadelphia Athletics finished in first place in the American League with a final record of 101-50 before defeating the New York Giants in six games to take the 1911 World Series. Ribbon has slight curl at bottom and tiny bit of fraying. All still structurally sound and firmly intact. .25" cello. separation at 3:00 that barely brings button out of round. Otherwise only tiny trace of wear seen upon magnification. High gloss. Photo images are strong and bold w/great contrast and clarity. VF. A magnificent baseball button. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
