Item Description
One of few known examples. 1.75". Missing St. Louis Button Co. back paper. Classic portrait photo of Hornsby in St. Louis Cardinals uniform (one of four different 1926 buttons to use this image, see next three lots). This button was issued specifically for May 22nd event and includes text "Hornsby Day." Held at Sportsmen's Park in St. Louis, he was presented with the 1925 MVP award, along with $1,000 in gold, and a medal for winning the Triple Crown. The Cardinals would defeat the New York Yankees 4-3 to win the 1926 World Series. Hornsby would gain election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1942. Moderate oxidation on metal back. Front has dark staining of brown bkg. rim and few other imperfections on the bkg. but image unaffected and shows only minor wear upon magnification. All remains glossy and image sharp and distinct.
