Item Description
22x30" chromolithograph. View of long train of box cars w/steam locomotive at bottom right. Smoking factory buildings in distance at top of this striking full color rural scene. Each car has signs for "Saville Somes & Co. Boston" on side and fly two "W.S." pennants. Text of note includes "Train Nearly One And A Half Miles Long" and "The Largest Single Shipment Of A Manufactured Commodity Ever Made." Scattered and faint damp staining. Margins have been trimmed but not affecting image. Fine. Vibrant colors and stirring design make this an imposing display piece.

McKinley ceremoniously pressed a button to send the shipment on it's way from Canton, Ohio. The Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester, N.Y., reported that "Arrangements had been made by a special electrician to make attachments at each starting point so that a signal bell on each engine near the engineer was connected by wire and at precisely 7 o'clock. Major William McKinley, president-elect, at Canton, Ohio, 'pressed the button' and simultaneously the engineer did the rest. At the same moment the trains started while hundreds viewed them with their flying banners."
