Item Description
Each is 1.25" with real photo image. Produced in Canada with curl text naming the maker "Basiliers-Montreal." The 1948 Montreal Royals were an affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. Montreal won the AAA International League pennant that season with a final record of 94-59 under manager, Clay Hopper. The Royals put the final exclamation point on their historic season by taking the post-season championship, 4 games to 1 over the Syracuse Chiefs. In addition to noted Hollywood movie actor, Chuck Connors, this Montreal club also featured up and coming Brooklyn Dodgers stars, Don Newcombe & Al (G.I.) Gionfriddo. All three ballplayers are included in this lot of seven. Also present in this partial set are: Lou Welaj, Cliff Dapper,  Jimmy Bloodworth and Bud Podbielan. Don Newcombe was the unquestioned leader of this club as well as being a former Negro League star just prior to Jackie Robinson's integration of the Major Leagues in April, 1947. Newcombe would go on to win NL Rookie of the Year, MVP, Cy Young as well as being a four-time All-Star and 1955 World Champion. He is the key button in this set, our last example sold in 2016 for $569. That same auction a Conners sold for $437. All have trace of oxidation on metal backs, more so on Dapper than the others.  Connors has a pinpoint indent to left of his head. Other scattered surface wear under magnification but all remain glossy and overall VF to Exc. These are scarce individually, rare to find this many at once. Paul Muchinsky Collection
