Item Description
This pioneer aviation comic strip was created in 1929 by two former WWI pilots, Dick Caulkins (who gained fame w/Buck Rogers) and Lester J. Maitland. The strip was distributed by the John F. Dille Co. The Skyroads Flying Club began in 1930. Over the years the strip featured a variety of daredevil pilots dealing w/many perils and romantic adventures. The strip ended in 1942. All items in this lot are from the heyday of the strip. 17 pieces in total. Seven are 8.5x11" paper sheets. One is Colonel exam which has been filled out in pencil. The others are letter for different ranks and mentioning premiums for the ranks: Pilot, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Colonel, Ace Of Reserves. All have fold lines as issued and other wear, VG to Fine. Membership card is worn, Good. Three buttons: "Buffalo Evening News" 1.25" and two 1" long oval "Flying Cadet", one w/o imprint and one w/"Cleveland News" imprint. Metal items are: Canadian bars award badge w/three bars, Lieutenant insignia badge, Colonel insignia badge, individual charms for Captain, Major oak leaf and combat plane. Many items are rare and among the few, if not only examples we've offered over our 54 years. The "smalls" have scattered wear/age but are mostly Fine to Exc. An extensive, instant collection. Most items are the actual examples shown in "The Official Price Guide To Pop Culture Memorabilia" by Ted Hake and comes with COA.
