Item Description
24x31" acid free matte w/18.75x26" opening. Text at center "Self Determination For The Black Belt" against a US map highlighting counties in the American South w/predominantly African American populations. Linen backed w/professional restoration to fill border losses, some outer text and minor holes along junctions of now well flattened folds. Red text and tiny text at bottom center have touch ups. Displaying Exc. As the 1932 election approached and w/African American communities struggling exponentially from the great depression, the Communist Party nominated WWI veteran, civil rights activist and high ranking party member James W. Ford as their Vice Presidential candidate. The nomination was a culmination of the party's attention to issues of racial equality and justice over more than a decade and also included a litany of African American down ballot candidates throughout the nation. Not lost on the candidates was the reality that some 4 million African Americans were unable to vote, thus the campaign focused on rallying the working class towards progressive changes to meet their basic daily needs. Despite the nominal electoral returns (slightly over 100,000 votes) the party was successful in engaging the African American community in electoral politics in a way that had not been seen since reconstruction. This poster captures the spirit of the historic campaign beautifully, making for an impactful artifact that tells the story in a single image, unsurpassed by its peers. One of only five known to us w/at least two others held by institutions and unlikely to ever be offered in commerce. A rare opportunity to obtain an important third party and civil rights poster.
