Item Description
30x46". Lettering w/moderate paint loss reads "Suffrage Bill Now Before The People In" w/22" bottom section listing "Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin." Behind the lower panel is an earlier panel listing "Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Kansas, Oregon." This panel was covered as the campaign for national suffrage progressed. Scattered holes and heavy wear throughout. Stitched at top to hold crossed piece for hanging. Good. A unique suffrage artifact capturing the progress of the movement. This banner was discovered together w/state and JGL banners in a Maryland estate, see lots #465-470.

Edith Hooker and her husband Donald founded the league in 1907. The group participated in the March 3, 1913 Washington DC demonstration the day before Woodrow Wilson's Inauguration. JGL was successful in growing its membership through 'suffrage hikes' that saw members walk from town to town carrying banners, distributing literature and staging demonstrations. Their direct-action philosophy aligned w/Alice Paul and in 1917 JGL joined Paul's National Women's Party (NWP). See additional banners found together in a Maryland estate in the following lots.
