Item Description
4" long inc. 2.25" cello w/"Lopez Co. Boston Compliments Of James M. Curley" back paper. Ornate brass hanger suspends ribbon attached under back paper on reverse. Ribbon has short horizontal separation affecting top of red field. Button has a trivial bump in field above Garner portrait otherwise only minor wear in reflected light. NM. This design stands alone at the top of the mountain for FDR jugates. Many years ago, an example of this paramount jugate turned up alongside a trio of the oval "July 4, 1932" FDR and Curley coattail buttons, indicating these were likely distributed at that early campaign rally only two days after the Democratic Convention nominated Roosevelt & Garner.

Curley, the colorful Boston Mayor, was an ardent support of Al Smith in 1928 flipping his allegiance to FDR for the 1932 campaign encouraging him to compete in the Massachusetts primary. Smith defeated him, badly, and Curley was denied a Delegate position at the summer nominating convention by the MA Democratic establishment. The clever Bostonian was undeterred securing a spot as Delegate for Puerto Rico and his support for FDR helped propel the New York governor to the presidential nomination.
