Item Description
1.25" each. First has scattered dots of age toning in cream background and retains original St. Louis Button Co. back paper. VF. Second has minor oxidation on metal reverse and a tiny dot in field at 3 o'clock on front. Exc. These buttons reference the Missouri 1950 Democratic senate primary. Truman threw his support behind Missouri State Senate President Pro Tem. Emery Allison rather than the consensus pick Congressman Thomas C. Hennings. Truman loyalists MO Gov. Forest Smith and St. Louis Mayor Joe Darst thus threw their support behind Allison despite the potentially poor optics of a Truman backed candidate losing in a primary battle in the President's home state, which was precisely the outcome. Hennings defeated Allison and carried the momentum into the general election defeating incumbent Republican Forrest Donnell for the Senate seat. These buttons were likely produced by supporters of Hennings in the aftermath of his victories.
