Item Description
1.75" w/slight oxidation layer on metal back and curl text "The Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark, N.J." Matewan, WV Police Chief Sid Hatfield and Deputy Ed Chambers were charged w/conspiracy related to a shooting in a mining camp in Mohawk, WV. The pair, who were aligned w/the United Mine Workers of America, were ambushed on the McDowell County courthouse steps August 1, 1921, shot down by members of the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency employed by mine owners. This button was produced around their Aug. 3, 1921 funerals. Button is missing a ribbon which was inscribed: "They Fought The Fight And Kept The Faith That Justice and Liberty Shall Not Perish In Mingo County. District 17 Of U.M.W.A." Button has dark age spots on rim from 10 to 4 that blend well. Cello has three tiny indents and moderate surface scratches from use. Overall Fine. A most historic labor button. To further appreciate the tragic history this button represents, Google topics such as Sid Hatfield, Battle of Matewan and Battle of Blair Mountain. Only the second example known to us.
