Item Description
The historical significance of the 1997 Masters Tournament is unquestionable, marking the first major championship in Tiger Woods' legendary career. Held April 10-13, 1997 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA, Woods would win, twelve strokes ahead of Tom Kite. This margin of victory is still (as of 2021) the largest in Masters history. At 21 years of age, Woods became both the youngest and the first non-white player to win at Augusta. The original 13-1/8x18" stitched nylon pin flag offered here is considered by many to be the most collectible of Masters flags for a number of reasons. First and foremost is the design itself. Augusta National produced a completely unique flag that year, featuring an embroidered "Masters" logo at center, the United States portion of the logo featuring shimmering yellow thread, outlined in Master green, creating a strikingly beautiful flag. This marked the first and last time a design of this nature was used. Left of flag has three brass grommets. Flag has been boldly signed in black felt tip pen by a total of five, Woods' signature appearing at upper right under Kenny Perry. Flag has been signed by three members of the World Golf Hall of Fame - Ben Crenshaw, Ken Venturi and Sandy Lyle. Stray pen mark at top center, but flag is o/w clean and Exc. Offered through Augusta's gift shop, these flags sold out early in the week of The Masters. Unsigned 1997 Masters flags typically sell in the $2,000 to $4,000 dollar range. Original flags such as the one offered here are readily identifiable by their intricate embroidery and do not have the year on them, as is present on the limited edition replica flag created by Upper Deck and signed by Woods. The Upper Deck replica flags are far less valuable. Due to Woods' contractual relationship with Upper Deck, it is highly unlikely that Woods will ever sign an original 1997 Masters flag again. An extraordinary opportunity to add a rare and well above par collectible to any golf aficionado's collection. Comes w/JSA LOA and Hake's COA. Among the most prized items in golf collecting this Masters flag is considered a "holy grail" by many collectors.
