Item Description
7x25-3/8" artboard features original pen and ink art for Feb. 20, 1931 daily strip, featuring pencils by longtime Mickey Mouse comic artist Floyd Gottfredson (whose tenure w/the strip began on May 5, 1930 and lasted until his retirement in 1975) w/inks by Earl Duvall. Strip is from the "Mickey Mouse Vs. Kat Nipp" storyline and features five panels, showing Mickey Mouse (whose tail is still in knots after his tussle w/self-declared "Toufest Guy In The Kounty" Kat Nipp) spotting Kat Nipp, who has replaced his "Painted Up" tail w/cattails from the swamp. Mickey quickly seizes upon the opportunity, whistling for pack of dogs, yelling "Look, Wienies!" while pointing to Kat Nipp's "tail." The dogs give chase and Kat Nipp is forced to flee. Mickey appears in every panel, Kat Nipp appears in three. Third panel has been signed "Walt Disney" by Gottfredson. Last panel has thin Walter E. Disney copyright strip paste-over and inked date. Top margin has two blue pencil editorial notations. Back has "A Case Of Mistaken Identity" (King Features Syndicate's episode title for the strip, for those newspapers that wished to give it one) written in blue pencil. Artboard has been rolled and has curl as such. Top margin has some scattered soiling, including 3/8" dark spot of moisture staining. Tiny area of staining in first panel, o/w art remains clean and VF. From the Estate of Disney Artist Earl Duvall, known for his work on Disney comic strips in the early 1930s and for a handful of animated short films he directed at Warner Bros. Cartoons. This and the previous two lots in this auction are the final three from the Duvall Estate.
