Item Description
2-1/16" single day issue from June 26, 1927. Whitehead & Hoag back paper (dark stain at right center only partially touching company text). Grabowski was back-up catcher on the fabled 1927 Yankees team. Why he was honored with his own day in 1927 when powerhouses such as Ruth and Gehrig were not remains a mystery. Johnny Grabowski played seven seasons in the Major Leagues. He joined the Yankees in 1927 and was part of World Championship teams in both '27 and '28. Known to his teammates as "Nig", he was a reliable catcher with a decent arm who was very well liked by his other Murderers' Row teammates. Has a 3/8" long cello flake on rim curl at 1 o'clock. Trace of aging and moderate surface wear in reflected light. Still glossy and image is sharp and bold. Fine. Paul Muchinsky Collection (his book example of this button sold in our Sept. 2020 auction for $1,183).
