Item Description
Original 3.75x6 5/8" glossy silver gelatin photo depicting 16 team members in full uniform posed on a baseball diamond. The 1939 Habana team featured a number of Cuban and Negro League stars and we have been able to identify several here: Julio Rojo, Miguel Gonzalez, Barney Brown, Luis Tiant Sr., Gilberto Torres, Roberto Ortiz, Frank Crespi and most importantly a young American pitcher named Early Wynn. Wynn began his MLB career with the Washington Senators in 1939 and would later join the Cleveland Indians in 1949 and finally the Chicago White Sox in 1958. Wynn finished with a career record of 300-244 along with a 3.54 ERA. Wynn was inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Early Wynn's Bowman rookie card was not issued until 1949, making this one of his earliest known professional baseball images. Back has various publication notations as well as a small paper caption, all documenting this as Habana 1939. Lt. handling wear mostly in reflected light. Strong, sharp image. VF.
