Item Description
Aside from the Corbett- Fitzsimmons 1897 fight buttons (see previous five lots), these six buttons are among the earliest boxing buttons, all produced by Whitehead & Hoag over a four year span 1897-1900. The boxing buttons, like their baseball counterparts, are without a dot screen on photographic paper. but sadly the range of contrast between image and background on all of these was often less than ideal. What they lack in contrast they make up for in rarity. All text and images can be seen, but in some cases, good light is necessary. We will describe these in date order based on the back papers. First are two from 1897 with Cameo Pepsin Gum papers. "Joe Choyinski"  with small 1/16x3/16" spot of missing back paper from far left. African American boxer "Bob Armstrong" back has .75" hairline cello split by collet but barely seen. The next two have W&H papers in use only 1898-1900. These show African-American boxer "Howard Wilson" and "Tommy Ryan". Ryan has lightly worn back paper and this is the only one of the six which is a Muchinsky Collection Book Example (#6). Last two have W&H papers used only in 1900. These show Harry Maynard and African-American Peter Jackson. Aside from the contrast issue, the celluloids are Fine to VF. Rare. All from Paul Muchinsky Collection.
