Item Description
This is one of five items on the front cover of Dr. Muchinsky's 2008 book Boxing Pinback Buttons (also see Jas. Corbett ribbon badge #706). As Muchinsky notes, Johnson had two July 4 fights, the second in 1912 vs. Jim Flynn; however, this is almost certainly from the 1910 highly publicized fight banned in San Francisco by the Governor and hastily moved to Reno. See the following two lots. This 1.25" button has Chicago union bug on top curl and bottom curl names maker "Geraghty & Co. Chi." Reverse has tiny age dots around collet. On the front just very minor  variation in the tone of the red rim plus one 3/16" age mark on the right side background and a speck of age on the letter "K" of "Jack". Full text is "O You Jack!  July 4th". Full gloss. Fine. One known to us and the only Johnson button we know of to feature color other than black/white. Paul Muchinsky Collection Book Example.
