Item Description
Among these six slogan buttons are four different back papers. Starting with the slogan "I Can Lick Johnson" Muchinsky notes it is uncertain whether this is a pro-Jeffries pre-fight button or a button issued after "The Great White Hope" lost to Jack Johnson. In any case, this green one is a Book Example button. It, along with the red one, have back papers naming Obak Cigarettes w/ California factory and naming button maker as Phelps in Newark. The dark blue version has back paper of Brunt in San Francisco, the fight site until changed to Reno. The next two, "Well, I Guess Not, White Hope" are both Muchinsky book examples and with the same Obak back papers- but obviously post-fight. The last button is also a book example and post-fight with a paper by Meek, Coshocton, Ohio. Muchinsky comments white on black format is likely intention along the lines of a memorial button for Jeffries. Tiny wear on second button but VF and rest Exc. to NM. All scarce to rare. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
