Item Description
8x10" folio letter w/postal cancellation on reverse. Comes w/portrait of Clay. Penned in an unknown hand from "Ashland Dec. 8th 1843" Clay seeks the transport of a pole for the Whig Convention in Baltimore. "...Left At Mr. Dudley's Grocery Store In Lexington To Be Sent To You By The First Trusty Waggoner, An Ash Stick, Fifteen Feet Long... I Wish You To Have The Goodness To Forward It Safely To Mr. Fahnestock At Baltimore. It Is Intended For The Purpose Of A Staff For a Banner, And I Am Anxious That It Shall Reach Its Destination Certainly And With As Little Delay As Practicable." Boldly signed "H. Clay" in black dip pen ink at conclusion. Three horizontal and two vertical mailing folds. Age toning mostly at edges and moderate handling wear. Fine. A fascinating look at Clay's preparations for the coming 1844 campaign.
