Item Description
.75x1.75x3" w/hinged lid. The Monroe Doctrine was issued in the shadow of Spanish colonies in Latin America achieving independence from Spain surmised from the idea that any intervention by foreign power in the the Americas could be considered "The Manifestation Of An Unfriendly Disposition Toward The United States." Though a pillar of American foreign policy, the term Monroe Doctrine was not coined until around 1850. The doctrine saw renewed interest around westward expansion and the Mexican War. This match safe was likely engraved during this period. Three of the four hinges are detached but the lid remains attached and closes snugly. Moderate overall wear from light use. Fine. Engraving work is well executed w/bold American eagle dominating the design.
