Item Description
First the button and then the history. This is a 1.25" cello with W&H back paper. Center has side view of devil with pitchfork, horns and pointed tail dancing over black flames. He is flanked by "Post 736" with surrounding text "Help The Black Devils, They Helped Us/Richard V. Pearson, American Legion." This legion post is located in East Liverpool, Ohio. The Black Devils or Black Devils' Brigade was officially the first Special Service Force, formed in World War II as an American-Canadian commando unit organized in 1942 and trained at Fort William Henry Harrison near Helena, Montana. The brigade fought in the Aleutian Islands, Italy, and southern France before being disbanded in December, 1944. Today, numerous American and Canadian Special Forces units trace their heritage to this unit. The only button we've seen to reference the unit and only our second example. Item was likely produced just after World War II in the late 1940s. Couple age dots around reverse collet. Button displays totally clean and gloss. A World War II rarity. Exc.
